Management is the backbone of any successful corporate entity within the business world. With regard to this backbone, goal setting is considered one of the most vital components. Drawing effective goals for any business is not an easy task. And business goal planning requires a lot of foresight and experience in the knowledge goal setting.
However, there is a lot of confusion in the minds of many regarding goals, objective and tasks. This puzzlement makes them not to sketch an effective business goal plan.
To understand these things better, let’s start with goal and what it is. Basically, goal is an extensive plan, and it is generic in action. Whereas the objective is a narrow plan within the broad plan of the given goal and it is specific in action.
It is just that, in a meeting, the CEO states that he wants the company financial report to be one in the top performers by the year end. Now this statement is called goal, has it is not measurable or tangible. It only states and points to a direction in which one has to go.
To make the above statement into an achievable goal we need to define specific time bound actions and these actions are called objectives. An objective with respect to the earlier statement can be “The Company should increase its sales every month and should earn itself a place in the top 5 performing companies in the said segment.” So you can see the difference between the two statements. And how it pin points to specific actions. Objective’s help in creating actionable plans and these plans contains tasks. And any given goal usually consists of more than one objective.
The tasks can be called has micro objective and are set at a much smaller time frame in comparison to that of objective. The tasks are defined on day to day basics. These tasks are like problems and when these problems are solved the pointer in the progress chart moves forward and upwards.
By going along with the example to increase the sales, the company has to set micro objectives or tasks. And here the task is that the company should work towards creating awareness among its consumers regarding its products. When the consumers have the awareness regarding the product the demand for the product increases, and the sales tend to move in the upward direction.
The above few statements have provided few good insights regarding goal, objective and tasks. We can also understand that setting goal is one thing and achieving the defined goal is completely a different task. Here we can notice that defining objective is vital for reaching the goal.
If the objective is not defined in a functional method, then the whole goal planning and task setting can become an uphill ride.
